Foret Noire

Even though my French is limited to just a handful of words that I’ve learned in highschool, I do know the meaning of Foret Noire. The latter is a pretty new French patisserie that opened on Broadway, just a couple of blocks from Cambie. They serve up a variety of fancy cakes, macarons, chocolates, drinks and other items. Surprisingly though, in spite of their name, they didn’t have any black forest cakes available when I visited. Maybe a misdirect? Oh well. I got their Exotic Flower, Broadway, Strawberry Chocolate Entremet, and Salted Caramel Chocolate Tart.

Exotic Flower ($7.2):

The cake contained a jelly-like mousse outside that had a really nice mango flavour, and a slight tanginess. It contained a chocolatey, crispy interior, and was topped with pieces of pineapple. I wasn’t completely sure if the chocolate paired well with the mango, but each of the components were very tasty.

Broadway ($7.2):

This consisted of chocolate mousse that’s coated with a chocolate glaze, and contained some pieces of biscuits inside. The mousse was smooth and creamy, and had a wonderful bittersweet flavour. The biscuits provided a great bit of texture. The chocolate was good quality and melted in my mouth without any waxiness.

Strawberry Chocolate Entremet ($7.2):

This was similar to the exotic flower, and consisted of a straeberry flavoured jelly surrounding strawberry preserves and a crispy interior. The strawberry had a great fragrance and provided a nice bit of tangy while the crispy interior provided a nice texture.

Salted Caramel Chocolate Tart ($7.2):

This consisted of a chocolate tart filled with chocolate mousse and caramel. The tart shell was tender with a great bittersweet flavour. The mousses were smooth and creamy, and not overly sweet. I especially enjoyed the small pieces of caramel on top, which provided a great fragrance and flavour.

I was very impressed by the cakes at Foret Noire, all of them were very good. The prices are a bit on the higher side, but I think that it’s worth it for the quality. All in all, I’d definitely recommend visiting the place.

Bonnie’s Breads

I had a friend who used to work at the Independent Grocer at Champlain Square. She was the one who turned me onto Bonnie’s Breads, which is a small bakery that’s located right across from the supermarket. Her favourite item there was their ham & cheese croissant, which she thought was the best thing ever.

I haven’t visited Bonnie’s Breads for probably several years now. Luckily, they’re still open, and they’re still making ham & cheese croissants. In addition to the croissant, I also got a Boston Cream Cake, Raspberry Cheesecake Slice, Chocolate Mousse Cake, Long John and Beef Sausage Roll.

Boston Cream Cake ($1.65):

The cake was quite soft, tender and moist. I enjoyed the chocolate glaze on top that provided a nice bittersweet flavour. I do wish that there can be more of the custard filling.

Raspberry Cheesecake Slice ($1.95):

The cake was quite light and soft. I did find it to be slightly bland on its own. The raspberry swirl provided some sweetness, although I do wish it would be a bit more tart.

Chocolate Mousse Cake ($3.65):

The cake was very soft and moist. The mousses were smooth and light, and had a really nice flavour, while the layer of chocolate on top melted in my mouth and wasn’t at all waxy.

Long John ($1.65):

The donut was quite light and fluffy, with a slightly chewy texture. The chocolate glaze was not waxy and had a nice bittersweet chocolate flavour.

Beef Sausage Roll ($2.35):

The crust outside was relatively flaky with a nice flavour. I quite enjoyed the sausage inside, which was tender and savoury.

Ham and Cheese Croissant ($2.35):

The croissant itself was quite buttery. The cheese provided a great bit of richness while the ham provided a nice flavour.

I’m glad to have finally revisited Bonnie’s Breads. I didn’t think their ham & cheese croissant was the greatest thing I’ve eaten, but it was still good, as were most of their other fare. The prices were very reasonable. This is a bakery that I’d recommend checking out.

Janice Cakeshop

I don’t go to Richmond often. I had no idea that the 430, which goes to Richmond, comes like once every 30 minutes on Sundays. I found that out during my visit to Janice’s Cakeshop. They are a small Asian/Chinese-style Bakery located in Richmond. As their name suggests, they make a large variety of cakes, as well as other baked goods. During my visit, I had several of their cakes (Green Tea Mousse, Fresh Mango, Lemon Cheesecake and Chestnut Cake), as well as a Pork Floss Sandwich, a Ham and Egg Sandwich, and a Pineapple Bun. Unfortunately, I didn’t take any pictures of the bakery, so I don’t know the exact prices for their goods, but they are fairly cheap.

The bun was fluffy and soft. The topping was crispy and provided a nice sweetness; unfortunately, I did find the bun to be a bit too plain to enjoy on its own.

Pork Floss Sandwich (around $1.50):

This consisted of pork floss and cheese with a clear, slightly sweet paste on whole wheat bread. The whole wheat bread was a bit dry and grainy for me. I really enjoyed the pork floss and the paste however.

Green Tea Mousse Cake (around $4):

This consisted of layers of green tea mousse and sponge cake. The cake was fine, being light and fluffy. Unfortunately, I did not like the mousse at all, which as thick, gummy, and utterly flavourless.

Fresh Mango Cake (around $4):

This consisted of layers of sponge cake sandwiching mangoes and cream. The cake was light and fluffy while the mango was sweet and tangy. I found the flavours to be a bit too bland, but this is definitely a good choice for anyone who wants something lighter.

Ham and Egg Sandwich (around $1.50):

This consisted of white bread sandwiching slices of ham and eggs, and what appears to be mayo. The bread was much less dry compared to the whole wheat from the Pork Floss sandwich. I initially found the sandwich to be a tad bit bland, but the interior was actually flavourful, with the mayo providing some richness to go along with the bread.

Lemon Cheesecake (around $4):

The cheesecake was quite light and fluffy, and had a great fresh, lemony flavour. The crust was also crispy. This is a lighter option to a regular cheesecake.

Chestnut Cake (around $4):

This consisted of sponge cake that’s sandwiches with chestnut paste and whipped cream. The cake was light and fluffy while the chestnut paste was creamy and wildly sweet.

In spite of the long wait for the 430 to come along, I really enjoyed my trip to Janice Cakeshop. With the exception of the green tea mousse, I quite enjoyed all of their other cakes, and their sandwiches were also quite good. The prices are also very reasonable. Definitely a bakery/shop that’s worth visiting.

La Gateau Bakeshop

I know that I shouldn’t complain snow (it’s Vancouver, and compared to most other cities both in Canada and the US we’ve been having it pretty good), but I just want winter to end already. Just when I thought that we were going to get out of this winter unscathed we get a cold spell…and with it snow…and probably even more snow for the next 2 weeks. Ugh.

Fortunately, I was able to make a trip to La Gateau Bakeshop before the first snowfall and all the buses breaking down and getting stuck half way up a hill. The latter is a small bakery located on East Hastings, not far from PNE and Playland. They seemingly special in custom cakes, but also offer cupcakes, mini cakes and other treats. I had their Red Velvet Cupcake, Salted Caramel Chocolate and Almond Cream Fruit Tarts, and Earl Grey Mini Cake.

Red Velvet Cupcake ($3.25):

The cake itself was pretty tender and moist. There was a good layer of cream cheese frosting. Unfortunately, I found it to be a bit too thick and lacking in flavour. I also felt that it had a slightly unpleasant aftertaste.

Salted Caramel Chocolate Tart ($4.75):

The crust was a bit blond, but quite tender; however, I did find it to have a slightly odd freezer-burned taste. I really enjoyed the chocolate and caramel ganache, which melted in my mouth and had a fantastic caramel flavour and sweetness.

Almond Cream Fruit Tart ($6.50):

This was filled with almond paste and cream, and was topped with fruit and a macaron. The macaron was quite airy and crispy, although quite sweet. I quite enjoyed the almond paste, which had a nice fragrance and was lightly sweet. Unfortunately, I found the shell to be a little too thick, although it was more well baked compared to the salted caramel tart. Again I did find thereto be an unpleasant freezer-burned flavour.

Earl Grey Mini Cake ($6):

The layers of cakes were quite tender and had a fluffy texture. I really enjoyed the layers of chocolate and the earl grey flavour. Unfortunately, I found the top layer of icing to be just terrible: it was thick, waxy and flavourless. I just ended up scraping it off and eating the rest of the cake underneath.

I had high hopes for La Gateau, and I have to admit, I do feel pretty let down by my visit. The treats, while not terrible, did leave much to be desired. The prices were also on the higher side, and in my opinion, not worth it for the quality. Not a place that I’d recommend.

Bakery Sate

I had a bit of an odd experience with the croissants at Bakery Sate. They are a popular bakery/cafe located on Commercial, a couple of blocks away from Broadway, serving up a pretty good variety of croissants, cakes, cream puffs, and other pastries. They hae several different and unique flavours for croissants; I had their Double Baked Coffee and Matcha (and also an Almond for my mom). I also got a Mont Blanc and Mango Puff, and their Raspberry Lavendar Milk Chocolate and Salted Caramel Milk Chocolate cakes. Now, the funny thing about their croissant was that when I bit into the one with green, matcha paste on top, it tasted strangely like coffee. And when I bit into the one with the dark coffee paste on top, it turned out to be filled with green, matcha paste. I haven’t contacted the bakery to ask, but I’m 99% sure that they had made a mistake and got the two croissants mixed up XD.

“Double Baked Coffee Croissant” ($4.50):

This was filled with coffee-flavoured frangipane, and topped with matcha paste and flaked almonds. The croissant itself was crispy and flaky, with a nice buttery and slightly salty. The fillling inside was rich and mildly sweet, and had a really nice coffee flavour. I also quite enjoyed the matcha paste on top, which seemed to have some white chocolate flavour.

“Double Baked Matcha Croissant” ($4.50):

This was filled with matcha-flavoured frangipane and was topped with coffee paste on top. Again, the croissant was crispy and flaky, with a nice buttery and slightly salty. Unfortunately, as is the case with most matcha-flavoured desserts, I found the matcha flavour to be quite subtle, although the frangipane was still quite tasty.

Mont Blanc Puff ($1.95):

This was filled with cream and chestnut paste. The pastry here I found to be a tad overbaked, and had a slightly bitter flavour, although it did have a nice crispness. I also really enjoyed the chestnut, which was lightly sweet and had a great fragrance.

Mango Puff ($1.95):

I actually asked for the lychee coconut puff, but they appear to have mistakenly given me the mango (oh well, no biggie). The puff was less darkly baked than the mont blanc. The mango custard inside had a great fragrance and sweetness.

Raspberry Lavender Milk Chocolate Cake ($4.95):

This consisted of chocolate sponge cake sandwiching raspberry and lavender mousse, and is glazed in dark chocolate. The cake was quite tender, although I did find it to have a slightly grainy texture. The mousses were light and creamy, with the raspberry providing a great tanginess and the lavender being quite fragrance. The chocolate glaze was also good quality and not waxy.

Salted Caramel Milk Chocolate Cake ($4.95):

This consisted of chocolate sponge cake sandwiching milk chocolate and caramel mousse, and is glazed in dark chocolate. Again, I wasn’t crazy about the texture of the cake. The mousses were delicious however; I particularly loved the caramel, which had a great fragrance and slight bit of saltiness that went great with the sweetness of the dessert.

In spite of the mix up in the flavours of the croissants, I still quite enjoyed them as well as the other treats from Bakery Sate. The prices are also very reasonable. Definitely recommend checking this place out.

Soirette

After my visit to Soirette I’m left quite puzzled. You see, I’ve never visited the shop before, but I’ve seen pictures posted online of people appearing to enjoy afternoon tea there (the kind that involves cakes and small pastries/sandwiches). This indicated to me that the place should be like a cafe with seating. However, when I visited, I saw that was not the case: the shop was tiny with just a front counter while the back appears to be just a kitchen where people dressed in chef outfits were busy at work making macarons. So what’s up with all the photographs of people having tea? The only thing I could think of is that maybe they’ve gone through some changes and have now stopped serving tea.

Fortunately, I wasn’t interested in tea; I just wanted some pastries. The shop is best known for their macarons, but they do also serve up cakes, various teas, and other small treats such as chocolates. I purchased a box of 6 Macarons and two of their mini cakes (unfortunately I can’t remember what flavours they were).

I had the Vancouver Fog, Praline, Pistachio, Matcha, Almond Butter Cookie, and French Rose. The outer layer of the macarons weren’t as crispy as the ones from Bon Macarons, but they did have a nice, chewy interior that I quite liked. The flavours for most of them were fairly good (Vancouver Fog, Praline, Almond Butter Cookie) were fairly strong; a few others (Pistachio) were a bit too subtle and weak for me to detect. My favourites were the Praline and Matcha.

“Pink” Mini Cake ($7.50):

I can’t remember the flavour of the cake; I think it was raspberry. The cake itself was quite tender and moist, with a slightly tangy flavour. I wasn’t a big fan off the frosting however, which was a bit bland and also greasy. And while the pearl decorations on top were certainly pretty, they were also very crunchy and a bit unpleasant to bite upon.

“Green” Mini Cake ($7.50):

Again, I don’t remmber the flavour of the cake, but it definitely had a floral fragrance to it. It was a bit harder and drier than the pink cake, but was still tender. Although I still found the frosting to be greasy and a bit bland, the pearls decorating this cake ware much smaller and less unpleasant to bite upon.

The macarons at Soirette were quite tasty, although I don’t think that their flavours were as intense as the ones from Bon Macaron. The cakes were also enjoyable, but not great. I do find their prices to be a tad on the higher side, though not too bad. All in all, this isn’t a place that I think you absolutely must visit, but it is still worth stopping by if you’re a fan of macarons.

Mon Paris

I go to Metrotown quite often, and each time, I’d pass by Mon Paris. They are a patisserie located just across the skytrain station that produces a pretty good assortment of chocolates, pastries, and pretty-looking cakes. I’ve visited the shop once before about a year ago and recently, decided to revisit the place. This time I had their Kouign-amann, Bacon and Cheese Bun, Double Baked Pistachio and Raspberry Croissant, Winter Special, Caramelia, Raspberry Caramel Tea Cake, and Almond Double Baked Croissant.

Kouign-amann ($3):

The pastry itself, while not melt-in-your-mouth, was still quite flaky and buttery, with a moist centre. The sugar outside the pastry was nicely caramelized and crispy.

Bacon and Cheese Bun ($3):

This wasn’t really a “bun”, but more of a croissant-like pastry dough that’s been rolled up into a spiral. It was a bit too hard/crisp, but did have a nice buttery flavour. It also had a good amount of bacon and cheddar.

Double Baked Pistachio and Raspberry Croissant ($4.70):

The croissant was well caramelized and had a great crispness on the edges, although the bottom was a bit soggy from the pistachio and raspberry filling. The pistachio flavour was quite forward: there was both paste inside the croissant and chopped pistachio on top. The raspberry jam had a great sweet fragrance and also tanginess that paired well with the pistachio.

Winter Special ($6):

This contained a thin layer of cake topped with mousse and a red current jelly. The cake was quite tender and moist while the mousse was light and fluffy. The red current jelly provided a great tanginess.

Caramelia ($6):

This contained a tart shell with apples and topped with caramel cream and mini cream puffs. The puffs were also filled with caramel cream, which was a bit stiff, bu thad a great fragrance and paired well with the apples, which were a little bland on their own, but provided a nice bit of crunch. I found the crust to be a little bland.

Raspberry Caramel Tea Cake ($5):

This consisted of a cake that’s surrounded by a layer of caramel/chocolate and topped with caramel cream and raspberries. The cake itself was quite moist. Again, the caramel cream on top was a tad bit stiff, but still tasty, while the raspberry provided a bit of tanginess that went well with the caramel. I really enjoyed the outer shell of caramel, which had a great crunch and fragrance, although it was a bit difficult to cut through.

Almond Double Baked Croissant ($4.90):

I’m glad to have had the chance to revisit Mon Paris: I quite enjoyed everything they made, in particular the double baked croissants and cakes. The prices are a tad on the higher side, but still reasonable given the quality of their food. This is a shop that’s definitely worth checking out in my books.

Meinhardt

I’ve passed by Meinhardt a number of times while visiting Pacific Centre, and recently decided to check this place out. For some reason, I always thought that the place was some kind of cafe due to signs that they’d have outside advertising breakfast/lunch specials. Well, it turns out they’re actually a grocery store in the vain of Whole Foods. Oh well. They still have quite a large selection of tasty-looking cakes and other desserts, as well as various other items. After much hemming and hawing, I settled on a Pork Empanada, Chocolate Decadence Cake Slice, and Black Forest Slab Cake.

Pork Empanada ($3.99):

The crust was a bit tough and not flaky enough for my liking. There was a generous amount of meat filling however, which was quite tender and juicy, and had a nice bit of heat.

Chocolate Decadence Cake Slice ($4.99):

This consisted of layers of chocolate sandwiching chocolate mousse, and was coated in chocolate buttercream. The cake was fairly tender and moist, while the mousse/buttercream was a bit hard/stiff, but not greasy. I did find it to be a tad on the sweet side. This is certainly no match for the version at Trafiq, but it is still fairly tasty.

Black Forest Slab Cake ($4.99):

The layers of cake was very tender and moist, with a nice bit of chocolate flavour. The cream was fresh and light, while the cherry fillings provided a great bit of tang.

Although I was a bit surprised/disappointed to find out that Meinhardt wasn’t what I thought it was, I did quite enjoy their food. The prices for their premade foods are fairly reasonable; I do find their groceries to be expensive, however. While I personally wouldn’t go there for groceries, their cakes are worth checking out.

Cadeaux Bakery

Asides from Trafiq, probably the best bakery in Vancouver is Cadeaux. They are probably best known for their five-layered cakes, which they usually sell in three varieties: London Fog, Carrot Cake, and a rotating chocolate variety. They do also have a large variety of other food as well, including tarts, croissants, cookies, and other pastries. Since it’s the holiday season, they were also offering some seasonal goods, including yule logs. During my visit, I had their Cheddar & Herb Scone, Cinnamon Croissant Swirl, Rum & Eggnog Yulelog Slice, Chocolate Caramel Crunch Cake Slice, and also an Almond Croissant for my mom.

Cheddar & Herb Scone (?):

The scone had a slightly crispy top. It had a great tender and moist interior, and was quite flaky. I could have done with a bit more herb and cheddar flavour, however.

Cinnamon Croissant Swirl (?):

This was filled with a dollop of caramel/toffee in the center. The croissant, while not melt in your mouth, was still tender and had a nice buttery flavour. It was nicely caramelized and had a wonderful crispy texture and great fragrance of cinnamon. The toffee inside was thick and gooey, although it was slightly a bit too burnt for my taste.

Rum & Eggnog Yulelog Slice ($5.50):

This was off of their seasonal holiday menu. The cake was relatively tender and moist. I wasn’t a bit fan of the rum/spice flavour, but I think that’s just a personal preference. Unfortunately, I really disliked the frosting on the exterior as I found it to be quite stiff and greasy, and also bland.

Chocolate Caramel Crunch Cake Slice ($6.50):

This consisted of layers of chocolate cake sandwiching a caramel mousse and is surrounded by white icing. The cake was quite tender and moist, while the mousse was luscious, with a wonderful caramelized flavour. I did unfortunately find the white icing outside to be a tad too gummy and greasy for my liking.

Having visited Cadeaux in the past and grown to love the bakery, I must say that my latest visit did leave me a tad bit disappointed. Nevertheless, their cakes are definitely fantastic and very reasonably priced for the quality. This is definitely a place that’s worth visiting if you enjoy sweets.

Bakery 101

I’ve got a soft spot for the current DC movies. Yeah, I get that most of their movies aren’t very good (Wonder Woman aside), but I still get a kick out of them. And I think that Man of Steel is a good movie and don’t understand those who complain about what happened to Zod in the end (seriously did anyone ever watch Superman II?!?). I still haven’t had a chance yet to see the new Aquaman movie yet; I’m probably going to go some time during the holidays. While waiting for the bus during a recent trip to Bakery 101 I found myself standing right next to a movie poster. On closer inspection, I couldn’t help but notice that there appears to be a lot of killer whales swimming alongside the sharks. Like seriously A LOT of killer whales:

But enough about DC. This post is about Bakery 101. They are a small cafe that’s part of the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts. All of their cakes & pastries are made by culinary arts students, and hence, are considerably cheaper than most other shops. Their offerings are always changing; during my most recent visit, I had a couple of their new cakes: Matcha Raspberry, Mango Coconut Caramel, “Peanut Butter Chocolate Mousse” and “Hazelnut Chocolate Mousse” (I don’t know the actual names of the latter two as they weren’t labelled in the display case). I also picked up a Goat Cheese Prosciutto Croissant for my mom.

Matcha Raspberry ($4):

This consisted of layers of matcha cake sandwiching raspberry and chocolate mousse and finished with matcha mousse. The cake was soft and moist. I really enjoyed the matcha flavour, and the raspberry lent a nice tartness. Personally though I could have done without the chocolate (even though I do love chocolate) as it did overwhelm the matcha a bit.

Mango Coconut Caramel ($4):

This consisted of coconut cake with mango mousse/jelly and caramel mousse on top of a crunchy wafer-like base. I really enjoyed each of the components separately: the coconut and mango were both very fragrant while the wafer had a great crunch and flavour. Personally though, I’m not really sure if the mango and the caramel/chocolate paired too well together.

Peanut Butter Chocolate Mousse ($4):

I didn’t get the actual name of this cake (they accidentally mislabelled it in the store), but it consisted of a peanut mousse that contained some chocolate, and was on top of a crunchy peanut base. I really enjoyed this treat. The mousse had a wonderful peanut flavour while the base was crispy, fragrant, and slightly salty. It was a tad on the sweeter side so it might not be for everyone (especially those who’re allergic to peanuts).

Hazelnut Chocolate Mousse ($4):

Again I didn’t get the actual name of this cake (it wasn’t labelled when I came into the store), but it consisted of hazelnut mousse with a chocolate centre that’s enclosed in chocolate. This was basically like a Ferroro Rocher in cake form. I did find that the hazelnut flavour was a bit too subtle at times.

cheese (she found it too gamey).

I really enjoyed my visit to Bakery 101. Their food is fantastic and their prices are a steal. This is easily one of my favourite places in Vancouver for some quality and affordable treats.
