Slikity Jim’s Chat & Choux

I’ve just had the most ridiculously awful experience with Vancouver public transit in recent memory. I was traveling to Slikity Jim’s a diner located in on 7th Avenue (they also have another location on Main Street). Since it as close to Broadway, I was taking the 99. The first bus that I was on broke down at the Arbutus stop (aka one stop away from Granville, where the restaurant is). I wasn’t too worried, seeing that the 99 came every couple of minutes; I simply unboarded and got onto the next bus. The bus travels maybe two blocks before it struck a car that was parked on the side of the road. Apparently, what happened is that the driver of the car happened to open their door right into the way of the oncoming bus. Fortunately, nobody was hurt, but I was seriously just about to give up on going to Slikity Jim’s. I mean what are the chances that you have a bus break down and a second bus crash into a car within two blocks of each other? But then a third 99 comes along and…I got on. Miraculously,  this one actually did manage to make it the few blocks to the Granville stop without any incident. Still slightly traumatized and very hungry, I hurried to my destination and ordered the Chez Fe and When the Chicken Lies Down on Broadway Sandwich. The latter was supposed to come with a choice of either salad, soup or potato, but unfortunately (because this is really not my lucky day) I didn’t have the opportunity to chose because just as I was ordering, the phone rang and the waitress went to answer. She didn’t get back to me, and had apparently already put in my order; when I received it, I ended up getting salad as my side (I would have actually picked soup).

Chez Fe ($13.75):

This consisted of braised short ribs and roasted potatoes in a gravy-like sauce, topped with two eggs and chimicuhurri, and is served with toasted focacccia. The short ribs were quite tender, although I do find it to be a bit underseasoned and one-note in flavour. The potatoes had a nice crispiness to them, even when smothered in the sauce. I quite enjoyed the eggs, which were well-seasoned. Strangely, my favourite part of the dish was probably the bread, which was like garlic bread and was great for mopping up the sauce.

When the Chicken Lies Down on Broadway Sandwich ($13.50):

This was a sandwich containing chicken breast, brie, and fig balsamic on a grilled baguette. It was supposed to come with a choice of salad, soup or potato; unfortunately, as I’ve mentioned earlier, I didn’t have the opportunity to chose and ended up with rabbit food (aka salad). Again, I loved the bread here, which was buttered and nicely toasted. The chicken was quite tender and flavourul and the fig balsamic provided a great tanginess. I do wish that there could be more brie present however; I wasn’t able to get much of it in the sandwich.

In spite of the horrible experience I had getting to Slikity Jim’s, as well as the unfortunate incident where I wasn’t able to pick my side for my sandwich, I did quite enjoy the food. The prices were also fairly reasonable. Service- wise, the waitress I had was fairly friendly but a bit inattentive. All in all, while I wasn’t blown away by the place, I did still enjoy my visit and would recommend checking it out.

Scoozis

I’ve got to admit, I probably don’t have enough vegetables in my diet. My recent visit to Scoozi’s probably provided me with more vegetable than I had in days. The latter is a casual Mediterranean joint located near the Waterfront serving up a pretty large menu of breakfast and lunch items. I had their Meatballs and Alfredo Deep Dish (it was a tossup between their lasagna and their deep dish; I decided to get their deep dish since it’s more unique).

1/2 Dozen Meatballs ($11.95):

This came with tzatziki, warmed pita, and some greens. The meatballs themselves were quite tender and relatively juicy, and was well-seasoned with just a slight bit of spice. I absolutely loved the pita bread, which was warm, fluffy, and had a slightly chewy texture. There was a generous amount of tzatziki, which was thick and quite tangy, and went well with the meatballs and bread.

Alfredo Deep Dish ($17.95):

This was basically a casserole that’s filled with vegetables (tomatoes, artichokes, zucchini, spinach), ham, cheese and other stuff that I can’t really discern. The vegetables were pretty well-seasoned and flavourful, and I really enjoyed the cheese, which provided great richness. I do wish that there could be more ham, and the dish was also a bit watery from all the vegetables.

While I wasn’t overly impressed with the deep dish (even though it did provide me with a good helping of vegetables), I quite enjoyed their meatballs. I’m also quite impressed by their service: the food arrives quickly and there is a very friendly gentleman (whom I think is the owner) who greets all the owners. All in all, this is a place that I’d recommend checking out.

Panaderia Latina Bakery

I’m both immature and a pervert, and I can’t help but think that the “cream horn” that I got from Panaderia Latina Bakery looks a bit like something else…

Can’t wait to take a bite out of this…

The latter is a Latin-American bakery located not far from the Joyce Skytrain Station offering a good selection of desserts. I’ve already previously checked the place out after seeing them featured on You Gotta Eat Here, and have been thoroughly impressed by their food. I had the opportunity to revisit them recently. In addition to the somewhat phallic “cream horn” that I got (unfortunately for some reason they don’t have the labels and/or price tags on their desserts when I visited, so I really don’t know what the names for each of the desserts are or their exact prices), I also had a Torta, Tiramisu, Empanada (with Dulce de Leche), and a “Chocolate Caramel Cake”.

Torta (around $5.50):

This contained layers of puff pastry sandwiching strawberry jam, custard, and dulce de leche. This was a great blend of different textures and flavours: the custard was mild and creamy, the jam was sweet and fragrant, the dulce de leche gooey and sweet, and the neutrally flavoured pastry helped cut through all the sweetness. It was a bit on the sweet side overall (I think that maybe it would have been better if they used a slightly tarter jam like raspberry), but still delicious.

Tiramisu (around $5.50):

The cake was very moist and luscious, and had a great fragrance of coffee. It was bittersweet in flavour; I did find it to be a tad too bitter, but still tasty.

Empanada, Dulce de Leche ($3.25):

The outer shell was crumbly and tender, albeit a bit bland and dry. The dulce de leche was thick and gooey, and had a wonderful caramelized fragrance. There was just too little of it however.

This consisted of a pastry shell that’s filled with pastry cream, and covered on one end with dulce de leche. The pastry was relatively tender, and completely filled with cream, which was mildly sweet. The dulce de leche was thick, gooey, and had a wonderful caramelized flavour.

“Chocolate Caramel Cake” (around $5.50):

This consisted of a sponge cake sandwiching a layer of dulce de leche, and was coated in chocolate. The cake was quite tender and moist, while the caramel was sweet and gooey. The chocolate was of good quality and melted in my mouth, and also provided a nice bitterness to help counteract the sweetness.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my revisit to Panaderia Latina Bakery: all of their desserts were quite tasty, and their prices are fairly reasonable. This is definitely a place that’s worth checking out.

Bon Macaron Patisserie

I don’t really understand the current obsession with macarons. I don’t understand why people all seem to be going crazy over meringue (aka low fat, whipped egg white) cookies; they just don’t sound overly tasty to me. But curiosity ended up getting the better of me, and there happened to be a macaron shop – Bon Macaron – that’s located on Broadway, just a short trip away from UBC. I decided to check the place out recently. They are, of course, specialized in macarons and offer them in several dozen different flavours (and also classes on making them). Unable to pick from such a large selection, I ended up going for a dozen macarons, which are priced at $18.

Dozen Assorted Macarons ($18):

All the cookies were crispy on the outside and slightly soft and chewy on the interior, and just melted in my mouth. Their flavours were all very intense and distinct; even if you can’t remember which cookies are which, you can quite easily tell most of them from taste/smell alone. My favourite varieties were the Dulce de Leche, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Salted Caramel, Tiramisu, Matcha, Chocolate Peanut Butter, and Nutella. A couple of them, in particular the caramels, were a bit on the sweeter side; I didn’t mind, but my mom (who also tried a couple) actually complained that they were too sweet for her taste.

I was pretty skeptical about macarons and I have to say, Bon Macaron has really changed my mind. While I wasn’t completely blown away from the treats – I do still very much prefer regular, chewy cookies – I still really enjoyed the cookies. The prices are a bit high, but considering the quality of their ingredients and flavours, I think that they are worth it. All in all, this is definitely worth checking out.

Eat Me Thai

A few days ago I was on the bus back home from UBC when I overheard a conversation that someone was having over the phone (yeah I can be a creep sometimes). Apparently, there was a glitch on some food delivery app, and it was giving people $10 off on all their orders; the person behind me had just ordered a Thai curry for $5 (instead of the usual $15) and was asking whether they should order some other food. Unfortunately, I don’t have whatever app they were referring to so I wasn’t able to take advantage of the glitch. However, the conversation did leave me with a craving for Thai food, and a restaurant that I had been wanting to check out is Eat Me Thai, which is located on Fraser, close to 49. Though small, they are quite clean and modern, and have small plants on each of the tables. In addition to their regular menu, which contains the usual dishes that you’d find at Thai joints, they also have lunch specials. I had their lunch version of Yellow Curry Chicken, a well as a Pad Thai off of their regular menu.

Pad Thai ($12.25):

This came with noodles stir fried with chicken, tofu, ground peanuts a and egg. The noodles were bouncy and the peanuts lent a great fragrance. I did find the flavour to be too sweet and sour however; I would have preferred more savory and spice. I also found the chicken to be a bit bland.

Yellow Curry Chicken, Lunch Dish ($11.50):

This came with fried wontons, steamed coconut rice & side salad. The curry was very flavourful and creamy, with a wonderful fragrance of coconut. There was a pretty good amount of chicken present, which were relatively tender for white meat. I also really enjoyed the fried wontons, which were very crispy and had a wonderful sweet & sour sauce. I didn’t care for the salad though, which were literally undressed greens.

Although I was a bit disappointed in the pad thai at Eat Me Thai, I did really enjoy their curry. Their prices are also quite reasonable. Service-wise, the food did come quite quickly, but the server I had was not very attentive or personable. All in all, this while I wasn’t blown away by the place, I do think it’s still worth checking out.

Vietnamese Restaurant

So while I was writing my review for Vietnamese Restaurant, I actually had a bit of a hard time locating it on the internet. Type in “Vietnamese Restaurant Vancouver” and you get a bunch of hits. I then tried typing in “Vietnamese Restaurant, Main Street” and again I ended up getting several hits. More confusingly, for some reason the restaurant that I went to is called “Cambie Vietnamese Restaurant” even though it’s certainly NOT on Cambie. No, the place is located on Main Street, near King Edward Ave. In addition to popular dishes that you’d find at most places (lemongrass chicken, pho etc), they do also have some more less common dishes like stuffed chicken, seafood, and hot pot pilaf. I’ve tried their Chicken Grand-Mere Farcie and one of their dinner combos.

This was chicken that has been stuffed with mushroom, ground pork, and onions, and is served with rice and salad. The chicken was a tad overcharred and a bit on the underseasoned side, but still tender and tasty, with a great fragrance from the mushrooms. I did also quite enjoy the salad, which was nicely dressed and had a sweet/tangy flavour.

Combination D ($13.99):

This came with pork brochette, Vietnamese roll dip, Vietnamese steamed crepes, prawns imperial, and rice vermicelli. It is served with vinegar, some sweet/sour dip for the spring rolls, and also peanut sauce at your request (which I strongly recommend getting, unless if you’re allergic to peanuts of course). I loved the roll dip and prawns imperial, both of which are similar to spring rolls, and are very fresh, hot, crispy and full of fillings. The pork brochette was quite tender and had a nice charred flavour. The steamed crepes are similar to rice rolls, and contain ground pork inside; I did find it to be a tad bland on its own, but it was very good with the peanut sauce.

I really enjoyed my trip to “Cambie” Vietnamese Restaurant. The food was quite tasty; I particularly enjoyed their fried foods like Vietnamese roll dip (which is actually a spring roll) and Prawns Imperial (another type of spring roll). The staff are also friendly and greet customers as ‘brother’ or ‘sister’, and the prices are quite reasonable. This is definitely a place that’s worth checking out.

Bogart’s Bar & Restaurant

I recently tried to visit Back Forty, but sadly, the restaurant appears to have closed down. I don’t know if that’s permanent (it doesn’t say closed yet on the social media sites), but a board sign standing outside the restaurant read “Fin”, which does sound quite ominous to me. Fortunately, there were a good number of other eateries nearby, and I soon spotted Bogart’s Bar right across the street. They are a clean and comfortable sports bar located right next to the BC stadium. In addition to various drinks, they feature a menu of comfort food (they are apparently currently undergoing a menu change). I ended up ordering their Mac & Cheese, Baked Brie, and Chicken Potato Gnocchi.

Mac & Cheese ($13):

This was mixed with bacon bits, and is topped a garlic crumble. The noodles were nicely cooked, being tender while still retaining some chew. The cream cheese sauce was creamy and flavourful; I do wish that there was more of it as the noodles on top were dry and a bit bland in the absence of the sauce. I really enjoyed the bits of bacon however, which were salty and had a nice, smokey flavour. The bread crumb topping lent a nice bit of texture.

Baked Brie ($15):

This is served with candied pecans, honey fig jam, and toasted baguette. The brie was creamy, with a nice pungent flavour; the fig jam and pecans had a great sweetness that paired excellently with the cheese. The baguette was nicely toasted, being crispy on the outside and tender and chewy on the interior.

Chicken Potato Gnocchi ($19):

This consisted of chicken and gnocchi, and is served in a pesto sauce, along with two slices of toast. In the menu the chicken was described as pulled chicken breast, but it turns out to be just pieces of chicken. However, it was still quite tender and juicy (for white meat), and was flavourful. The gnocchi was nice, tender and slightly chewy; I did find them to be a bit bland on their own, but they were very tasty when coated in the pesto sauce, which had a wonderful garlicy flavour. I also really enjoyed the accompanying bread, which was nicely toasted.

Even though I’m quite saddened to find that Back Forty appears to be closed, I did quite enjoy my visit to Bogart’s: all of the food was quite tasty and the server I had was quite friendly. The prices are a tad on the higher side, though not outragerous. All in all, this is a place that’s worth a visit.

Pekoe Tea Lounge

On my way back from Deja Brew from the previous post, I happened to pass by Pekoe Tea Lounge. They are a tea shop offering a variety of drinks, as well as bagged teas and accessories to take home, and a small selection of cakes, pies, and other treats. Being not the biggest tea/coffee afficiando, I decided to pick up Banana Chocolate Cream Pie, Turkey Pot Pie as well as a Red Velvet Cake and Carrot Cake. Unfortunately, when I got back home, I realised that their cakes were actually the exact same as the ones from Stuart’s Bakery (with the latter’s prices being slightly cheaper). I have to admit, I did feel a bit bummed out by this; I don’t know if they make their own pies (I assume they do, for the sign on their store window says “home made gourmet pie”).

Banana Chocolate Cream Pie (around $9):

This was filled with bananas and topped with whipping cream. I really enjoyed the crust, which was coated with chocolate, and was quite flaky. The bananas were creamy and mildly sweet. I did find the whipped cream to be a bit stiff and bland.

Turkey Pot Pie (around $9):


3.5/5
This contained turkey, stuffing, cranberries. The filling had a great blend between savoury and sweet/tart from the cranberries. The turkey was just a tad on the dry side, but not overly so, and was well-seasoned and flavourful; I did find the ginger pieces to be a bit too large and sharp/astringent. The crust was quite flakey and had a nice flavour without being overly burnt. Portion-wise, the slice was generous, probably 1.5x the size of what you’d normally expect.

Red Velvet Cake ($6.25):

This was from Stuart’s Bakery. The cake was dense, but moist and tender. The cream cheese frosting was creamy and sweet, with a nice bit of tang. It was nice, but you can get the same thing from the source for a bit cheaper.

Carrot Cake ($6.25):

This was also from Stuart’s Bakery. The cake was very moist and tender, and contained raisins, while the cream cheese frosting was creamy and sweet. I could have done with a bit more tang however. Again, this was tasty, but you can get the same thing from the source for a bit cheaper.

Although I do feel a bit disappointed that the cakes from Pekoe Tea Lounge were the same as Stuart’s (and also more expensive), I did quite enjoy the pies at Pekoe Tea Lounge. While I haven’t tried any of their drinks, I still quite enjoyed my trip. This place is worth a visit.

Deja Brew

I’m a bit of a sucker for restaurants with clever/cute names. Thus, when I saw a place called “Deja Brew” I just couldn’t resist checking it out. The latter is a small cafe located on Broadway, not far from VGH. They serve sandwiches, soups, and drinks, as well as a small selection of cookies and muffins. You order at the front counter and (if you’re eating in) sit at at table, and wait for the staff to bring the food to you. I had their Diablo Chicken Club, House Roasted Beef, and Power Cookie.

Diablo Chicken Club ($11):

This contained chicken breast, bacon, greens, tomato, chipotle mayo on a multigrain ciabatta bun. I really enjoyed the bun, which was nicely toasted and had a nice texture and fragrance from the seeds. The bacon and mayo were flavourful; however, I did find them to be a bit stingy with the chicken. I also found there to be a bit too much greens, which made eating a bit difficult.

House Roasted Beef ($11):


3.5/5
This contained onions, greens, mayo and either horseradish or mustard (I had horseradish) on a multigrain ciabatta bun. They were much more generous with the meat this time. I did find the beef to be a bit dry however. Again, I really enjoyed their bun, and the horseradish provided a nice flavourful kick.

Power Cookie ($3.10):

This contained oatmeal, pecans, coconut, and chocolate chips. The cookie, although not very big surface-area wise, was quite thick. It was soft and quite moist, and chocked full of goodies. The oatmeal provided a nice texture, while the coconut added a great fragrance. I did find the pecans to be a bit raw.

Although I wasn’t overly impressed by the sandwiches at Deja Brew, and found their prices to be a bit high (especially since the sandwiches aren’t very large), I did really like their power cookie. All in all, while I was a tad disappointed by the place, I did enjoy my visit enough to recommend checking this place out.

The Diner

So I tried fried bread recently at The Diner, and I realised that I’ve apparently been missing out my life. The aforementioned restaurant is located in Kits, just a short distance away from UBC. They area simple, homey shop with quite a large menu consisting of British comfort food. I had their One-Piece Fish & Chips (with Haddock) and Traditional British Breakfast.

One-Piece Fish & Chips, Haddock ($12.80):

The fish was fairly generous in size and was coated in a wonderful layer of crispy batter. I haven’t had haddock many times before; the meat I guess was kind of like cod and was quite tender and juicy. I don’t think the quality of the fish was as good as a place like Fish Counter, but it was still good and not fishy. I absolutely loved the fries, which were also very crispy on the outside, while being tender and starchy on the interior.

Traditional British Breakfast ($9.95):

This came with bacon, eggs, sausage, baked beans, fried tomatoes, hashbrowns, fried bread, and toast. This was the first time that I’ve ever had fried bread and I have to say, I’ve been missing out. The bread was wonderfully crispy and absolutely soaked in oil/grease in the most wonderful, delicious way. It’s certainly not going to be for everyone, but I absolutely loved it. The bacon was tasty and the sausages were juicy with a nice bit of spice. I also enjoyed the beans, which were tender and had a nice bit of sweetness. I did find the eggs to be underseasoned and also a bit undercooked (which was my fault for not specifying how I wanted my eggs to be – I actually like my eggs overmedium/overhard). The hashbrowns were pretty disappointing for me; they were mushy and not crispy, and also underseasoned/flavourless bland.

I absolutely loved the fried bread the Diner; I seriously wish I could eat it every day. The rest of the food was pretty tasty as well, and the prices are reasonable. The service was quite friendly. This is definitely a place that’s worth checking out.
