I admit, I can get pretty cranky. I don’t like to be bothered. I like being left alone in my own little cave, watching shows and eating pastries. Thus, after learning of a place called Kranky Cafe, it seriously sounded like a place for me. The latter is a small coffee shop located near Main Street and Broadway. In addition to various drinks, they offer sandwiches, patties, and rustic homestyle baked goods. I’ve sampled their Strawberry Rhubarb Pie, Chocolate Coconut Nanaimo Bar, and Chocolate Cake.
Strawberry Rhubarb Pie ($5):
Unfortunately, the pie was quite wet and delicate, and did fall apart during the trip back home. Fortunately, it was still very tasty. The filling had a great balance between sweetness and tang, and was filled with large chunks of rhubarb. The oatmeal streussel topping provided a nice texture and sweetness. I did not care for the crust, which had gone soft and gummy, but that really didn’t bother me too much as the filling and streussel more than made up for it.
Chocolate Coconut Nanaimo Bar ($3.50):
Their version consisted of a thin layer of chocolate cake/base topped with coconut and covered in another layer of chocolate. It was delicious for what it was. The coconut had a wonderful fragrance and texture while the chocolate melted in my mouth and was not waxy. I did find it a bit small for the price.
Chocolate Cake ($3.80):
This was a simple dessert consisting of a piece of cake covered with thick chocolate frosting. I really liked the cake, which was very dense and fudgy, but still moist. I did find the frosting to be a bit overly sweet however (and I love sweets), and a bit lacking in chocolate flavour.
Although Kranky Cafe does not really appear to be a hangout for cranky people (since cranky people probably don’t like hanging out anyways), I did quite enjoy their food, and their prices are very reasonable. I’d recommend checking this place out if you’re near the area, especially if they have pies available.
