One of the things that I like about working/studying at UBC is that it’s only a short bus ride away from Kitsilano, where there are quite a good selection of places to get something sweet or greasy (or both) to enjoy for lunch (and knock a couple of years off of my lifespan). Nevertheless, I probably wouldn’t have visited a place called Baguette & Co had not for the existence of the internet. Although I do like a good baguette, I certainly wouldn’t visit a place for baguettes (or other plain bread). Fortunately, thanks to the internet (more specifically Yelp and Zomato), I found out that Baguette & Co apparently also offers cakes and pastries, which were enough to warrant the 15-minute bus ride from UBC Loop. I was initially a bit disappointed to find that there selection of sweets were pretty limited: they only had 4-5 cakes/tarts available on the day of my visit. I quickly settled on getting a Lemon Tart and a Chocolate Success.
Lemon Tart ($4.5)
4.5/5
I’m surprised by how much I enjoyed this tart. The lemon curd was creamy, tart and bursting with a bright citrus flavour. The meringue on top as fluffy and sweet, almost marshmallow-like. The crust was also tender and easy to cut into.
Chocolate Success ($4.65)
4.5/5
Being the massive chocoholic that I am, this dessert was literally screaming my name. It consisted of two thick layers of chocolate mousse sandwiched between two layers of cake and encased in a shell of chocolate. The chocolate mousse was thick, creamy and bittersweet while the cake was incredibly tender and moist. I did find the chocolate shell to be a tad waxy and perhaps not of the highest quality.
Despite my initial disappointment by their limited selection of cakes, Baguette & Co has completely exceeded my expectations with their tasty offerings. Furthermore, I found their prices to be very reasonable. This may not be in my top 10 favourite bakeries in Vancouver, but I’m certainly glad to have paid the place a visit.
